Folks it's arguably the most entertaining athletic day of the year and that day is the first day of the first round of the NCAA men's division 1 basketball tournament. It MAy not be until tomorrow but it's so close I feel like it is already upon us. I will be providing my picks round by round in each region.
East Region:
First Round
Kentucky over ETSU- DeMArcus Cousins will have a huge game.
Texas over Wake- Texas will beat a mediocre Wake team.
Temple over Cornell- Everyone is picking Cornell and forgetting that Temple is a good team. Go OWLS!
Wisconsin over Wofford- Jon Leur is a hugely underrated Big 10 talent.
MArquette over Washington- Marquette is undersized but extremely talented and hungry
New Mexico over Montana- No upset here New Mexico is a solid 3 seed
Mizzou over Clemson- Clemson is to inconsistent and Missouri's uptempo game will give them problems
West Virginia over Morgan State- WVU is a scary team in this region
Second Round
Kentucky over Texas- This will be a great game. If the potential number one ranked Texas team shows up Kentucky could have problems but I don't see that happening.
Temple over Wisconsin- I love Wisconsin as a program but this Temple team is being over looked by MAny experts, they beat Villanova, Siena, and lost to G-Town by 1. This team is good.
MArquette over New Mexico- Buzz Williams is a young coaching star and I see his experienced guards outplaying New Mexico's guards and advancing to the sweet sixteen.
West Virginia over Missouri- This game will feature two athletic teams playing hard but Missouri is over-MAtched.
Sweet Sixteen
Kentucky over Temple- Kentucky is too big and too good for the Owls.
West Virginia over MArquette- In a big east battle West Virginia will just edge out MArquette.
Elite Eight
This regional final will come to which team plays better defense. Kentucky will have to stop Da'Sean Butler, Kevin Jones and Devin Ebanks. West Virginia has John Wall, DeMArcus Cousins and Eric Bledsoe. This is a real tough pick because both coaches can motivate their players to defend for a trip to the final four. In the end I have to go with the senior leadership that Kentucky lacks and West Virginia has. WVU will head to Indianapolis.
South Region:
First Round
Duke over APB- Obvious.
Louisville over Cal- The Pac-10 has been too weak to prepare the Bears for Lousiville.
A&M over Utah States- In a battle of the Aggies, Texas is a dangerous 5 seed.
Siena over Purdue- Siena is a solid MAC champ and Purdue without Robbie Hummel isn't as scary or as good.
Notre Dame over ODU- I hate picking the Irish but it is St. Patty's Day.
Baylor over Sam Houston State- This is a talented versatile team that can go far in this region.
St. MAry's over Richmond- The West Coast champs made Gonzaga look terrible I think they will do the same against the Spiders.
Villanova over Robert Morris- Scottie Reynolds won't let the Wildcats lose in the first round.
Second Round
Louisville over Duke- Yes I did it! Duke is the weakest number 1 to me. Louisville is very capable of pulling this off and I had to MAke this pick.
A&M over Siena- This will be an interesting MAjor mid-MAjor MAtchup. UltiMAtely A&M is superior on the inside.
Baylor over Notre Dame- Baylor is going to create a lot of mis-MAtches inside and on the perimeter.
Nova over St. MAry's- Villanova has just enough of an inside presence to beat up on the Gaels.
Sweet Sixteen
A&M over Louisville- The Cardinals run will end here due to the toughness and play of Bryan Davis. Whether or not SaMArado Samuels shows up will decide whether or not the Cardinals get past Baylor.
Baylor Over Nova- What a game this will be. Baylor has big men, Nova doesn't. The Bears will attack the paint and head to the elite eight.
Elite Eight
Baylor over A&M- A Big 12 reMAtch will be a physical battle that the Bears will pull off. The Baylor senior class has continuously been doing things their school has never achieved and this final four run is one of them.
West Region:
First Round
Syracuse over UVM- There will be no repeat like the first round upset UVM pulled off in 2005.
Gonzaga over Florida State- Florida State MAy have size but not enough to out play the Zags.
UTEP over Butler- Culpepper and Caracter are a very dynamic duo and I think they will outplay the Bulldogs of Butler.
Vandy over Murray State- Murray State is a popular upset pick but Vandy can shoot it from deep and Andrew Ogilvy is a force down low.
Minnesota over Xavier- After watching the Gophers play in the Big 10 tourney I think they have enough perimeter talent to beat Xavier.
Pitt over Oakland- Superior talent will prevail.
Florida over BYU- Jimmer is a scorer for BYU but Florida is the more complete team.
Kansas State over North Texas- Frank MArtin's team will win multiple games this year.
Second Round
Cuse over Zaga- Even is Onouaku isn't playing yet I think this one seed is just too good to lose this early.
UTEP over Vandy- I watched this team play on TV twice I just love the way they play and Caracter versus Ogilvy will be fun to watch. Go Miners!
Pitt over Minnesota- Tubby Smith will only take his team this far, Pitt and Ashton Gibbs will prevail.
Kansas State over Florida- The K-State guards will outplay the young wild guards of the Gators.
Sweet Sixteen
Cuse over UTEP- Although the Miners create MAtchup problems I don't think they will be able to handle the 2-3 zone.
Kansas State over Pitt- Curtis Kelley will prove to be the key in this matchup as the Wildcats look forward to the Orangemen.
Elite Eight
Cuse over K-state- The big MAn should be healthy by then and the Orange just have too MAny weapons on the perimeter for the wildcats to stop. If the Wildcats can play superb defense they have a chance to steal a final four trip.
Midwest Region
First Round
Kansas over Lehigh- This team has the most experience. They will win this one and more.
UNLV over Northern Iowa- Northern Iowa is a popular pick but UNLV is a very good team.
Michigan State over New Mexico State- Tom Izzo's bunch is always ready come MArch.
Maryland over Houston- Houston stole a bid to get here but they won't steal a win.
SDSU over Tennessee- I like Bruce Pearl but I like the Aztecs more!
Georgetown over Ohio- A true final four threat with Greg Monroe at the head of the ship.
Georgia Tech over Oklahoma State- This team is a force on the inside and they will physically beat down the Cowboys.
Ohio State over UCSB- UCSB is beautiful but the end result of this game won't be.
Second Round
Kansas over UNLV- Sharron Collins and Cole Aldrich will dominate.
Michigan State over Maryland- This team will end up giving Kansas fits and as long as the keep Vasquez in check they should over power Maryland.
Georgetown over SDSU- Hoyas a more talented and complete team period.
Ohio State over Georgia Tech- The BIGS of Georgia Tech MAy cause some problems but Evan Turner is too much for the Yellow Jacket guards.
Sweet Sixteen
Kansas over Michigan State- In a battle of two great coaches it will come down to weather or not the Michigan State bigs can MAtchup with Aldrich and the Morris twins. RayMAr Morgan was once a phenom at MSU but he has been inconsistent if the Spartans want to have a deep tourney run he must step us his play.
Georgetown over Ohio State- Georgetown is more complete then the SDSU. Evan Turner will have a huge game but the Hoyas are simply just a deeper team and they will end the number 2 seed's tourney.
Elite Eight
Kansas Over Georgetown- This game will down right down to the wire. These two teams when playing well are two of the most complete teams in the country. But the Kansas bench is deeper then the Hoyas so be aware the Jayhawk reserves.
Final Four
Kansas over Syracuse
A game that should be the championship frankly. The Jayhawks are the most complete and have one of the best coaches in the country. The two men pictured atop have been here before and will succeed again.
West Virginia Over Baylor
The Mountaineers are a team with stars, a experienced coach and a unique hunger for the game of basketball. Watch this team when you get a chance because you will see a team destined for glory. Baylor just doesn't have the talent to pull off another big win.
Championship- This will be a very hard MAtchup for WVU and they will battle until the end but when looking at a team like Kansas it is hard to find holes and when they are playing well and are healthy I think they are the best team in the NCAA. Bill Self will bring home another national championship to Kansas.
